2013 Renewals and Additions

As you may know, every year each lodging facility we have listed on the Joe's House website must be renewed for the following year  With close to 2,000 lodging facilities it's an enormous but rewarding job. Here's what we have accomplished and what we have added for 2013.

Over 250 "hospitality houses" and Ronald McDonald Houses renewed

Lodging facilities in 121 cities across the country in 46 states!

New hospitals added include the Cancer Treatment Center of America in Newnan, GA (about 30 miles from Atlanta)

Six locations of the Comprehensive Cancer Centers of Nevada added to the site. Welcome to our newest partner!

Money Magazine
As we reported in our Fall newsletter, this past October Joe's House President Ann Calahan was featured in Money Magazine as one of its 40 "Money Heroes".
For the November issue the magazine asked each of the 40 heroes for  financial advise based on his or her field of expertise. Here is a copy of what Ann submitted to Money Magazine:

Obtaining good health insurance is the most recommended advise in the healthcare industry. But what happens when you are blind-sided by a catastrophic disease and there are financial implications that you never anticipated? Like the film "The Blind Side" you may have to build a new family, however this time, a financial one.
For over eight years, Joe's House has assisted cancer patients by finding them discounted lodging rates as they travel for care all across the country; along the way we have also accumulated a wealth of information that can help mitigate the often coinciding financial challenges.  If you have to travel for treatment, organizations such as Corporate Angel will let you fill an empty seat on a corporate jet. Another association to help defray the cost of air travel uses donated airline miles; The American Cancer Society's Hope Lodges allow cancer patients and family members to stay free of charge.
Need help on your career and a cancer diagnosis, there's an .org for that. What about help paying for child care? Yes, there are organizations for that, too. Want a wig and just can't make the finances work, there are at least 5 companies who donate or help pay. Trying to navigate Medicare and save some precious funds? Look no further than another Money Hero.
My best financial advice after a shattering diagnosis is to surround yourself  with a new family of people and organizations that can help your bottom line in ways you never before considered.

Half Marathon
Running for Joe's House - News from the President

Some of you received a letter from me in March called "Running for Joe's House". Almost 30 days ago I ran my first 1/2 marathon in 30 years! I was expecting 30 hours of agony afterwards. I'm happy to say that with the support of family, friends and donors I ran 13 miles in 2:15 and felt great (okay the day after was a little tough).

Many of you gave $30 (and more) to see me through the 30th anniversary run. Thanks to all of you Joe's House raised over close to $900! (www.joeshouse.org)

I won't wait another 30 years to run one again, but I doubt it will be next year either. Thank you again for all of your encouragement.

Interesting Articles/ Other Resources
During the course of the year we come across stories from patients of course, but we also hear about exciting new cancer treatment centers, procedures, breakthroughs, resources and interesting articles.

Here are a few things we found that might be of interest:
  • An article from Cure Magazine about how to talk to your doctor about information you find from the Internet:http://www.curetoday.com/index.cfm/fuseaction/journey.showArticle/id/9/enableStageSubMenu/3/article_id/1876
  • Our friends at Cancercare have a plethora of workshops and podcasts to help those battling cancer. May: Understanding the roles of Clinical Trails and in June part of the Living with Cancer series: Changing Roles of Caregivers. Use this link http://www.cancercare.org/connect_workshops to see a complete list.
  • Testimonials: We get hundreds of calls a month and scores of emails each week. Here are just a few of the stories from patients, family members and social workers. Sharon was looking for financial assistance, lodging and air transportation. While Joe's House does not offer financial help we steered her in the right direction while helping with lodging and sending her to National Patient Travel Helpline for air travel. Jim was very grateful for lodging information in Columbia, MO as was Stacey for information for a patient traveling to Maine.

  • Amazing responses in Phoenix, Portland, Oregon, Dallas, Birmingham and more.

A special thanks to the 30 + members of Intercontinental Hotels Group that extended their hospital rates in critical cities such as Houston, Philadelphia, New York, and Seattle to name a few.

Know of a property that would like to be on our website? Send an email to info@joeshouse.org.

Medical Tourism

Joe's House President Ann Calahan and board member Maureen Rigney, a social worker on staff at Lung Cancer Alliance, will present a poster on the subject of medical tourism, "Patients who travel for treatment: Current status, future trends, and available resources" at the 2011 Association for Oncology Social Work conference in St Louis in May.

  • What is medical travel, or medical tourism?

Medical tourism is the process by which patients travel to places outside their immediate vicinity, sometimes overseas, to receive treatment for their condition.

  • How long have patients been traveling for treatment?

As long as we have recorded history. Ancient Greeks built temples to honor their god of medicine, Asclepius, which people visited from far and wide hopes of a cure for their ailments. In the United States, people traveled as early as the 18th century to spas and retreats seeking treatment for diseases like tuberculosis.

  • How many patients travel for treatment within the United States?

In recent years medical tourism, both in and out of the country, has increased dramatically. The practice of medical tourism is increasingly being legitimized by both employers and insurance companies, and is an important topic in today's healthcare debate.

A 2010 study by Deloitte Center for Health Solutions found that 7% of American patients travel outside their immediate area for treatment.  While the real number of those who do so is unknown, we can try to make an educated guess about the potential number of cancer patients who do. The CDC indicates that 18.6 million adults have been diagnosed with cancer in the US. If 7% of those patients travel for treatment, that's over 1.3 million, and that doesn't include the vast number of children with cancer who travel for treatment. Specialized pediatric cancer treatment centers are limited in the country so children with cancer often travel for treatment.

  • Why do cancer patients travel for treatment?

For a variety of reasons. Some are seeking the best care at a center of excellence for their particular cancer. Some need specific treatment(s) not offered closer to home. Others travel to take part in clinical trials, and still others to receive treatment closer to the support and care of loved ones.
  • How can Joe's House help?

While patients often travel for treatment for the best of reasons, the reality is that doing so can be both an emotional and financial challenge. Joe's House helps to fill a critical need for those who travel by helping them identify the best housing values available, in two easy to use formats, by phone or online.
The Voice On The Phone

Joe's House is incredibly lucky to have Charlee Vees as the voice for our toll free line.

Charlee spent the first 10 years of her working life in social services and comes to Joe's House through our partner Mercy Medical and the National Patient Travel Center Helpline where she began as a volunteer and now works full time.

When we asked her what she liked most about her job, she said "...talking to people on a daily basis, who are facing unbelievable hardships physically, emotionally, and financially who retain their sense of humor, their faith, their tenacity, and their humanity, and knowing that through the resources of Joe's House and other organizations we are able to lift their burden just a bit."

She says this too about her experience working for Joe's House and the National Patient Travel Center Helpline, "Our mission is to provide the best possible experience for our patients and the most useful resources for our patients and their family as they undergo some of the toughest times of their lives battling illnesses of all types and at all ages.  Their courage and determination is an inspiration daily.  I can't tell you what a privilege it is to be able to provide some assistance in their journey."

Fundraising
Once again we are humbled and amazed at the continued generosity of our donors. Joe's House had a very successful fundraising season in 2010! A special thanks to the family of Ellen Warnecke, Doug Smith and Katie Desmond, Cyrus S. Radford, Jr and Harry and Betsy Wall. And, a very big thank you to each and every person who donated to Joe's House in 2010. As trite as the saying is,  every donation really does help! YOU make it possible for us to continue helping patients.

The resulting page gives you details about the facility and how to make a reservation (Joe's House does not make reservations for you). Some places to stay can even be booked online! Joe's House 2K
Two thousand places to stay, wow! Joe's House just crossed the 2000 mark after the completing the addition of the Wyndham Hotel Group. We've added 11 new brands (see our Partners Page for complete details), which translates into an additional 560 plus hotels.

Don't forget each of our Partners offers their discount at all of their participating properties across the country, regardless of whether the city appears on Joe's House website.  Our Partners Page outlines each discount, how to make a reservation and links for online bookings.

Although Joe's House caters to cancer patients, any patient, regardless of their diagnosis can use our discounts.  We gladly assist our friends at the National Patient Travel Helpline with their travelers. Through referrals and inquiries we've helped a number of patients traveling to new destinations, including Lubbock, Texas, Delaware and Wyoming this year.
Why Joe's House
Patients travel for many reasons. Some live in rural areas and have no other choice but to travel for treatment. Others travel to receive specialized treatments that are only available at certain centers. Still others travel to large cancer institutes for second opinions or clinical trials not available closer to home. For most, this is a stressful time and leaving the comforts of home can be overwhelming and expensive.

JH LogoJoe's House helps patients and their loved ones with both by providing a comprehensive, easy to use service that gives them the benefit of special discounts at both individual hotels and hotel chains. The inclusion of hospitality and non-profit houses such as the American Cancer Society's Hope Lodges and Ronald McDonald Houses only increases the value to those who travel for treatment. Joe's House is a unique and valuable service for all those who travel for treatment!

We have the ability to customize a lodging directory and build a special page specifically for a single hospital or group. We will also negotiate with the local hotels on the behalf of the hospital.
